Wellbeing
The emotional and physical wellbeing of our students is pivotal to their success at school, as adolescents, and in their future lives. Physically and emotionally healthy students are happy, able to deal positively with life’s challenges, experience a sense of connectedness with the school and others, and are well placed to develop into well-balanced and successful young adults.
At Our Lady of the Southern Cross we aim to:
-
provide an educational environment which recognises, values and builds student wellbeing
-
develop students who are physically and emotionally healthy
-
promote and explicitly teach the core values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience
Diversity
At Our Lady of the Southern Cross Primary School, we believe every child is valued, regardless of their specific learning needs. We use a range of resources, tools and strategies to prioritise adjustments and learning outcomes so students are engaged and participate fully in their learning journey. Students with diverse learning needs are supported and included in the curriculum.
At Our Lady of the Southern Cross, we are committed to fostering inclusive practices that respond to student needs and make adjustments so that all students are actively engaged in learning on the same basis and can experience success.

This is done by the reinforcement of existing legislative requirements that apply to all schools and education institutions under the:
● the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1992 and
● the Disability Standards for Education 2005
When a student has an identified diverse need, by either enrolling at the school with a diagnosis or is identified with a diverse need while in attendance, the Learning Diversity Leader (LDL) will set up a Program Support Group Meeting (PSG) with Parents/Guardians to discuss in full, the student’s strengths and challenges, and devise a plan which may include a Personalised Learning Plan (PLP) and/or referral pathways.
PBL
Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL) is an evidence-based framework that brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. The framework assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children and young people.
Our learning community is committed to processes that support all students to make optimal progress and respect the rights of all students to learn in a positive and supportive environment. We seek to provide successful participation and to intervene as early as possible when students are not actively engaged in learning. Student behaviour is linked to the quality of the learning experiences. Purposeful, authentic, and relevant learning experiences, that are sufficiently challenging yet achievable, maximise positive student behaviour.

Student Leaders
Students at OLSC have the opportunity to contribute to the school through student leadership. Student leadership plays a vital role in fostering a positive and inclusive school environment.
Student leaders serve as role models for their peers by demonstrating the school’s values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. Through helping organise school events, assisting teachers and supporting fellow students, they develop leadership skills and a sense of accountability. Student leaders also help bridge communication between students and staff, offering feedback and suggestions to improve the school community. Their involvement encourages teamwork, boosts school spirit, and helps build a strong foundation for future leadership opportunities.
In a particular way, students in Year 6 have the opportunity to demonstrate leadership through a variety of positions, such as Social Justice leadership, Sports, Arts and Technology leaders, and School Captains and SRC.
